In spite of the uneven character of the collection, some stories are really good, and a select few (such as Thomas Ligotti's "The Red Tower", Jack Cady's "The Night We Buried Road Dog", and David B. Can love change the nature of the beast that only wishes to do harm? Tidhar is not looking for an overarching theme but tries to make the reader aware of the wealth of material being produced outside the US and UK. There are a fair few ghosts within the pages. Cain, Chester Himes, Mickey Spillane, Jim Thompson etc., but also forgotten writers like William Cole, Benjamin Appel, Jonathan Craig, Helen Nielsen and others.

Unlike those movies, however, Flesh and Fantasy incorporated supernatural elements that leaned toward horror. One of my favorite stories is Camille Alexa�s �For They Are as Beasts�, about a village on an island in the North Atlantic that has been favored by Moccus over the mainland.
